"Axehedz" is an alternative to the pricey formal display axes seen in Firefighting catalogs and websites.The axes are made from solid hardwoods not found in the local home centers. The axeheads are made from heavily figured black walnut and the handles are made from either straight-grained White Oak, Ash, or Hickory, (unless specified, the handle will be made from whichever of the three choices are available at the time).
"Axehedz" offer special order axeheads made from "Cherry" which contrast nicely with a few handles made from "Persimmon", a very hard wood that has a pale color similar to Poplar.
"Axehedz" also make display mounts from Birdseye Maple which compliments the axes very nicely.
Two custom made wooden hangers are mortised into the display mount to hold the axe in the vertical or horizontal positions; a Maltese Cross design allows two axes or belt axes to be postioned in an "X" pattern.
As for contruction, each axehead/ handle is bandsawn and routed to rough dimensions, then hand shaped with drawknives and spokeshaves, and finally, sanded to 600 grit. Six to eight seperate coats of an oil-based finish are hand applied/ rubbed into each finished axe and display mount.
Each axe is individually numbered and names, nicknames, or short phrases are burned into each item by hand using a woodburning pen for no additional charge.
